Somatic Symbolism and the Hands

  • Jane Clapp Movement 18 Hook Avenue Toronto, ON, M6P 1T4 Canada (map)

“Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.” C.G. Jung

The hand is the most frequently symbolized part of the human body for good reason. Throughout history, hands have symbolized a myriad of aspects of the human experience and express aspects of the unconscious and conscious psyche, both personal and collective. Hands are a powerful somatic tool to awaken and create dialogue between the conscious and unconscious psyche and to explore the alchemical intersection of soma and psyche.

In this 2.5-hour workshop, we will explore the multi-faceted symbolism of hands through video art, myth, religion, movement, drawing, touch, texture and writing to dialogue and awaken powerful unconscious and resourcing material within our psyches.

An integrated and foundational understanding of the autonomic nervous system and neurobiology is recommended so that we can move beyond nervous system discourse and theory to focus on deeper explorations together.
